WMGK-FM Aids Families Who Can’t Afford Holiday Meal
January 9, 2016
There are thousands of families in the tristate area who more than ever need the help provided by 102.9 WMGK-FM’s annual John DeBella Turkey Drop. WMGK-FM’s partner in the Turkey Drop, City Team Philadelphia, has seen a record number of signups for holiday meal assistance this year. Once again on Turkey Drop day, lines stretched from inside City Team Philadelphia’s Chester, PA, headquarters, around the block and over the 7th Street bridge. Many families were seeking assistance for the first time.
On November 24, 2015, Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK-FM’s morning host, John DeBella, broadcasted live and accepted monetary and turkey donations at Love Park. The John DeBella Turkey Drop is the largest one-day food-gathering event in Philadelphia, typically raising more than 9,000 turkeys.
The Turkey Drop benefits City Team Philadelphia, an organization that provides food and services to less fortunate individuals, families, shelters and food groups in the tristate.
While DeBella was broadcasting from Love Park, members of the MGK on-air staff were spread around the tristate area, accepting donations at seven Giant Food Stores locations in Pennsylvania and at Cherry Hill Jaguar in New Jersey.
Listeners were also able to make a secure, tax-deductible donation online at the station’s website, www.wmgk.com.
In addition to providing meals for those who come to their headquarters, City Team also provides turkeys/holiday meals for more than 70 agencies and religious organizations. Although the holidays are the busiest times for City Team, its services are needed year-round—three meals a day are provided every day of the year.
