Detroit Sports 105.1, Detroit Tigers FDN Support Dominican Youth Baseball
December 3, 2014
Detroit Sports 105.1, Detroit Tigers Foundation and Apple Vacations came together to support youth baseball in the Dominican Republic. In October, Detroit Sports 105.1 awarded trips courtesy of Apple Vacations to the Iberostar Dominicana in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The group traveled from Detroit to Punta Cana, with Detroit Sports 105.1 host, Matt Dery, for an extremely rare opportunity to join Tigers players JD Martinez, Bryan Holaday and Nick Castellanos to tour the Tigers Dominican Academy. While at the Academy, the Tigers players presented over 500 pieces of youth baseball equipment and one hundred Detroit Tigers t-shirts to the children in a neighboring orphanage, Our Little Brothers Dominican Republic.
Native Dominican Tigers players, Melvin Mercedes and Jose Valdez were also in attendance. The Tigers Dominican Academy, and Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, provided a lunch to the group and everyone in attendance was able to watch an Instructional League game.
Later in the day, Martinez, Holaday, Castellanos and Detroit Sports 105.1 staff visited Our Little Brothers Dominican Republic. During the tour, a 17 year-old boy who lives at the orphanage followed the players around campus. At the end, Martinez took off his shoes and gave them to the boy as a gift. The boy gave him back his flip-flops as a souvenir to remember him by.
