101 WRIF-FM Takes The Plunge
October 7, 2014
For the past several years staff from 101 WRIF-FM have taken The Plunge—the Detroit Polar Plunge.
The Polar Plunge is an annual event put on by Special Olympics of Michigan in downtown Detroit. Participants throughout metro Detroit gather to jump into the Detroit River, all supported by sponsors and donations that the “Plungers” gather in the weeks leading up to the event.
For the past few years, the Riff Rock Girl has also taken The Plunge in support of this great cause.
For six weeks leading up to the event, WRIF-FM drives listeners to make a donation online to get the Rock Girl to make her jump in a bikini. This year Riff Rock Girl Lyndsey was joined by WRIF-FM Music Director Andy Green and “Dave & Chuck the Freak” Producer James Campbell.
The three of them gathered at the Detroit River with more than 500 fellow plungers on a very cold Saturday in February. Mother Nature did not disappoint this year—the temperature was below 20 degrees when the jumping started! Despite the frigid temperatures, Lyndsey, Andy and James, along with all of their supporters, raised more than $180,000 for Special Olympics of Michigan.
