DeBella to Preside Over Blessing of the Balls for the Phillies

April 4, 2013

On Friday April 5, 2013 at McFadden’s at Citizen’s Bank Park, 102.9 WMGK-FM’s John DeBella (weekdays 6am to 9am), will preside over a ceremony led by three religious figures from the tri-state area that involves blessing the baseballs that the Phillies will be using during their “Home Opener” game later that day. It’s John DeBella’s 7th Annual Blessing Of The Balls. The live broadcast will begin at 6am and the blessing will take place at 8:30am. In 2008, when DeBella had three religious figures bless the baseballs that the Phillies were going to use on Opening Day, the team went on to win a World Championship later that year. DeBella is hoping for a similar result from this year’s “Blessing Of The Balls”.

Two of the three religious figures blessing this year’s balls – Pastor Jeff Raffauf of West Lawn United Methodist Church and Rabbi Gregory Marx of Congregation Beth Or – took part in the 2008 blessing. Father Kevin Nadolski, Director of Development and Communications for the Oblates of St. Francis De Sales, will be this year’s ‘rookie blesser’. Each religious figure will perform their own separate blessing on the baseballs.

In addition to the Pastor, Father and Rabbi, the following guests will join John DeBella on-site at McFadden’s that morning: Comedian Craig Shoemaker, former Phillies’ pitcher Dickie Noles and Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker. Jayson Stark, senior baseball writer for, will also appear on the show as a call-in guest. The first 50 people in the door during the Blessing of the Balls broadcast will receive a free ‘MGK Home Opener’ t-shirt. McFadden’s will provide complimentary coffee, donuts and bagels from 6am to 9am and free breakfast from 10am to 11am (while supplies last).

Later in the day, from 1pm to 4pm, 102.9 WMGK-FM will host a tailgate party on the front lawn of the Holiday Inn Stadium (10th and Packer Ave). There will be plenty of games and free giveaways.
