Preston and Steve’s Camp Out for Hunger
December 3, 2012
93.3 WMMR listeners have donated 627,678 pounds of non-perishable food items to feed the area’s hungry. Over 313 tons filling 24 tractor trailers were collected over a 5 day live broadcast. This is the largest amount collected in the event’s fifteen year run. (Last year, WMMR collected 576,687 lbs.) Though Preston & Steve encourage individual and business food donations, their listeners also donated over $106,000 in cash.
All last week (Mon, 11/26 thru Fri, 11/30), WMMR’s Preston & Steve lived in the parking lot of the Metroplex Shopping Center in Plymouth Meeting, PA collecting food for Philabundance, broadcasting live each morning. Over 30 celebrities/performers attended to drum up additional support for the effort, including Philadelphia 76er Spencer Hawes, Philadelphia Flyer Scott Hartnell, former Flyer Bernie Parent, Villanova basketball coach Jay Wright, Pat Croce, Gaslight Anthem Lead Singer Brian Fallon, former PA Governor Ed Rendell, PA Governor Tom Corbett, Gary Hoey, Hal Sparks, Judd Apatow, and Robert Irvine.
Philabundance notes for each pound of food and for each dollar raised, 3 meals can be realized/provided. The donations from WMMR’s one week initiative mean over 2 million meals for those in need in the Delaware Valley.
For the second straight year, Subaru of America provided the largest donation from a business – 326,479 pounds – scoring them a 4-hour live Preston & Steve broadcast from their business headquarters in Cherry Hill.
