Smyth Named America’s Best Broadcaster

Greater Media Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter H. Smyth was named America’s Best Broadcaster by Radio Ink Magazine during the 2011 Annual Radio Wayne Awards on Wednesday, September 14th during a special luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
The prestigious honor is given to an individual who has made the greatest impact on the radio industry as a whole. The Radio Wayne Awards were inspired and named after Radio Wayne Cornils, a radio broadcaster who served many years as an executive vice-president of the Radio Advertising Bureau.
As Chairman and CEO of Greater Media, Inc, Mr. Smyth provides innovative leadership capabilities to one of the nation’s leading broadcasting companies. A visionary in his field, Smyth began his career with Greater Media in 1986 as General Manager of WMJX-FM Boston, and over the past two decades he has served in a variety of capacities including Group Vice President of Radio and Chief Operating Officer.
Mr. Smyth began his career in broadcasting in 1977 as an account executive with WROR-FM in Boston and soon after was promoted to General Sales Manager, a position he held for the next five years. In 1983 RKO General, the parent company of WROR, recruited Smyth to serve as General Sales Manager of its New York stations where he directed the company’s sales operations until his departure in 1986.
Throughout his career at Greater Media, Mr. Smyth has continually revolutionized the broadcasting industry by developing new technology and incorporating innovative services to improve media communications and meet the emerging demands of the industry.
Currently, Mr. Smyth oversees the operation of 22 AM and FM radio stations in Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Philadelphia and New Jersey; a group of weekly newspapers in central New Jersey; and several telecommunications towers throughout the United States.
Smyth’s leadership has been recognized by industry leaders such as Radio Ink Magazine, a leading broadcast industry publication, which in 2005 selected Smyth as “America’s Best Broadcaster” and for the past decade has recognized him each year as one of the “40 Most Powerful People in Radio”.
In 2007, the publication named Mr. Smyth “Radio Executive of the Year,” an award that honors top executives who exemplify the values that are vital to the growth and success of radio.
Mr. Smyth has previously served as the chairman of the Radio Advertising Bureau’s Board of Directors. He has also served as past president of the New England Media Association and as a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Broadcasters and the HD Digital Alliance Oversight Committee.
An active philanthropist, Mr. Smyth currently serves on the Board of Directors of the New England Baptist Hospital and the One Hundred Club of Massachusetts – an organization dedicated to enhancing the welfare and safety of families of public safety officers and firefighters. He is also a past member of the Board of Trustees of Emerson College and the United Way of Massachusetts.
Mr. Smyth has been recognized by numerous organizations throughout the Commonwealth for his commitment to the community. In May of 2007, he received the “Humanitarian of the Year” Award from the Hundred Club of Massachusetts and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Commerce degree from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts in 2011.
Mr. Smyth is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
