105.7 WROR Morning Personalities Loren & Wally Show Support of Building a Statue to Honor Basketball Legend Bill Russell
Loren & Wally Contribute $1,000 to Start Fund
In the wake of President Obama mentioning the need for a statue in honor of Celtics legend Bill Russell, 105.7 WROR-FM morning personalities Loren and Wally contacted Mayor Thomas Menino and Senator Scott Brown to ask what needs to be done to make it a reality. In addition, the radio duo publicly committed $1,000 toward the start of funding the project.
“I hope that one day, in the streets of Boston, children will look up at a statue built not only to Bill Russell the player, but Bill Russell the man,” said President Obama, just before presenting Russell with the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, yesterday at the White House in Washington, DC.
“He (Bill Russell) was really a leader on and off the court,” said Mayor Thomas Menino. “He came back to Boston for the Democratic National Convention and said to me, Mayor, this is a much different city today than it was when I played here – a much more tolerant city. People work together much better. That’s why I’m here for the Democratic National Convention.” The Mayor added that he and his staff were planning to meet about it.
“He’s just larger than life,” stated Senator Scott Brown. “There are certain people in this world that go through life and they have an aura about them. Not only do they make a difference, obviously through their athleticism, but through their being just a man.”
“Bill Russell has been an icon,” commented Stephen Pagliuca, Managing Partner & Alternate Governor of the Boston Celtics. “He’s come back and talked to our team and Kevin Garnett and been involved in the playoffs and just done wonderful things, I think, for civil rights and for the city and the game of basketball for many, many years and he should be honored like this.”
