December 7, 2010

On Friday, December 3rd, legendary recording artist Patti Austin was interviewed by DJ’s and met with its members for an in-depth mentoring session as part of the Over My Shoulder Foundation recently founded by the Grammy award-winner and long-time friend, Dawn Carroll, to celebrate the concept of mentoring.

Greater Media’s Magic 106.7-FM recently invited Ms. Austin to perform at the annual Boston Common Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 2nd.  During a recent interview with Magic’s Candy O’Terry, the singer spoke about the importance of mentoring in her career and giving back through the Over My Shoulder Foundation.  Greater Media Boston works closely with and immediately thought it would be great if she could ‘mentor’ the members of while she was in Boston for the tree lighting ceremony this week.  Ms. Austin enthusiastically agreed!

Patti Austin has always been an inspiration.  She made her debut at the Apollo Theater at age four and had a contract with RCA Records when she was only five.  Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington have proclaimed themselves as her mentors.  The Foundation was named after Austin’s most recent single, Over My Shoulder, which was co-written by Dawn Carroll, for Patti to sing with one of her mentees, Lianna Guiterez.

With the goal of raising awareness of the impact that mentoring can have both cross-culturally and cross generationally, the Over My Shoulder Foundation has garnered tremendous support nationwide, ranging from musicians and authors to everyday individuals.
